What We Install

Outdoor & Garden Electrical Services

All outdoor electrical work must be installed to the correct specification for external use — weatherproofed fittings, correctly rated cables, RCD protection and proper earthing. Cutting corners outdoors creates a serious safety risk.

Outdoor Sockets & Power

Weatherproof outdoor sockets for the garden, patio or driveway. Correctly rated, RCD protected and properly earthed.

Garden & Patio Lighting

Low-voltage path lighting, feature lighting, patio uplighters and pergola lighting. Designed and installed to complement your garden.

Security & PIR Lighting

Outdoor security lights, motion-activated PIR floodlights and dusk-to-dawn lighting for driveways, garages and rear access.

Garden Rooms & Outbuildings

Full electrical installation for garden rooms, home offices, workshops and outbuildings — power, lighting and heating circuits.

EV Charge Points

Home electric vehicle charging on the driveway or in the garage. Properly installed with PEN fault protection and NICEIC certification.

Hot Tub & Spa Electrics

Hot tub installations require specific outdoor electrical work to BS 7671 Part 7 special locations — properly specified and certified.

Why Get It Done Properly

Outdoor Electrics — Why Specification Matters

Outdoor electrical work is covered by BS 7671 Part 7 special locations requirements. The wrong cable type, an unprotected socket or an incorrectly earthed fitting can be dangerous — particularly in a garden where children and water are present.

All outdoor circuits RCD protected
IP-rated outdoor fittings throughout
Correctly armoured or SWA cabling where required
NICEIC Electrical Installation Certificate on completion
Part P Building Regulations notified where required
Common Questions

FAQs — Outdoor & Garden Electrics

Do I need an electrician for outdoor sockets and garden electrics?
Yes. Outdoor electrical work is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations and must be carried out by a competent person. As an NICEIC registered contractor we self-certify the work — you don’t need to apply to Building Control separately. DIY outdoor electrical work is not permitted under Part P.
Do outdoor sockets need RCD protection?
Yes — all outdoor socket outlets must be protected by a 30mA RCD under BS 7671. This is a mandatory requirement, not an option. We fit RCD protection on every outdoor circuit as standard.
What IP rating do outdoor sockets and fittings need?
Outdoor sockets require a minimum IP44 rating — protection against splashing water from any direction. Fittings in more exposed positions should be IP65 or higher. We specify the correct IP rating for every location. A fitting that looks weatherproof but has the wrong rating is not compliant.
Can you run a cable underground to a garden room or outbuilding?
Yes. Underground cables must be armoured (SWA) or run in conduit, buried to the correct depth — typically 600mm under a lawn, 450mm under a path with route markers — and routed to avoid other services. We carry out all aspects of the installation including the trench and reinstatement.
Do I need planning permission for outdoor electrics or a garden room?
Planning permission is generally not required for the electrical installation itself. The work does need to be notified under Part P of the Building Regulations, which we handle as your NICEIC registered contractor. The garden room structure may require planning permission separately — that is distinct from the electrical work.
What electrical work does a hot tub installation require?
Hot tub installations fall under BS 7671 Part 7 special locations. They require a dedicated circuit, 30mA RCD protection, equipotential bonding of all metal parts within the zone, and the correct cable specification. This is specialist work that must be carried out by a competent electrician and self-certified under Part P.
What is included in a garden room electrical installation?
A full garden room installation typically includes a sub-main cable from the house consumer unit to the outbuilding, a small consumer unit in the garden room, power circuits for sockets and appliances, lighting circuits, and the correct earthing and RCD arrangement. We provide a written quote detailing everything before work starts.
How deep does outdoor cable need to be buried?
Under a lawn or garden — 600mm for standard cables, 450mm for armoured cable with route markers. Under a path or drive — 600mm for armoured cable. Correct depth protects cable from spades, forks and other garden tools. We always install to the required depth and mark the route.
Will I get a certificate for outdoor electrical work?
Yes. All outdoor electrical work is notifiable under Part P. You’ll receive an NICEIC Electrical Installation Certificate confirming the work meets current regulations. We notify Building Control on your behalf. These documents are important if you sell your home.
Do you carry out outdoor and garden electrical work in Blackheath and Chislehurst?
Yes — we’re based in Chislehurst and carry out outdoor and garden electrical work across Blackheath, Bickley, Bromley, Lee, Eltham, Greenwich and across SE London.
