Common Faults We Fix

Electrical Problems We Deal With Every Day

If something’s wrong with your electrics, don’t ignore it. Some faults are minor — others are a sign of something more serious that needs proper attention.

🔴 Burning Smell or Scorching

A burning smell from sockets, switches or the consumer unit is a potential fire risk. Call immediately — don’t leave it.

🔴 Sparking Sockets or Switches

Visible sparks when plugging in or switching on are a sign of a loose connection or damaged wiring that needs immediate attention.

RCD Keeps Tripping

An RCD that trips repeatedly is protecting you from a fault. We find the cause — a faulty appliance, wiring fault or deteriorating circuit — and fix it properly.

Circuit Breaker Tripping

A breaker that keeps tripping on a specific circuit usually indicates an overload, short circuit or earth fault on that circuit.

Faulty or Dead Sockets

Sockets that don’t work, feel warm or are discoloured may have a loose connection or damaged wiring behind them.

Flickering or Intermittent Lights

Flickering lights are often a loose connection in the fitting, switch or wiring — or occasionally a sign of a more significant wiring issue.

Complete Loss of Power

If you’ve lost power to part or all of your home and it’s not a supply issue, there’s likely a fault that needs tracing before power can be safely restored.

Intermittent Faults

Problems that come and go are often the hardest to diagnose — loose connections, poor earthing or deteriorating insulation can all cause intermittent issues.

Failed EICR — Remedial Works

If your Electrical Installation Condition Report has identified C1 or C2 defects, we carry out the remedial works and issue the completion certificate.

Common Questions

FAQs — Fault Finding

My RCD keeps tripping — what should I do?
First, unplug all appliances on the affected circuit and try resetting the RCD. If it holds, plug appliances back in one at a time to identify the faulty one. If the RCD trips with nothing plugged in, or trips again quickly after being reset, there’s a wiring fault that needs proper diagnosis. Call us — do not keep resetting it and ignoring the problem, as the RCD is protecting you.
What causes an RCD to keep tripping?
An RCD trips when it detects a current imbalance — usually caused by a faulty appliance, deteriorating cable insulation, a wiring fault, or moisture getting into a circuit or fitting. Identifying the exact cause requires testing with specialist equipment. We carry out insulation resistance testing and earth fault loop impedance testing to find the source properly.
How much does electrical fault finding cost?
Fault finding starts from £100 call-out. The total cost depends on how long it takes to locate and repair the fault. We’ll give you a clear indication of likely cost before we start, and provide a written quote for any repair work before proceeding.
Is it safe to stay in the house with an electrical fault?
It depends on the fault. A burning smell, scorching, sparking or complete loss of power are signs you should treat seriously. If in any doubt, switch off at the consumer unit and call us immediately. For minor faults like a single dead socket, it’s generally safe to wait for a proper repair — but don’t use the affected socket or circuit.
I can smell burning from a socket or switch — what should I do?
A burning smell from a socket, switch or the consumer unit is a potential fire risk. Stop using that socket or switch immediately. If the smell is strong or you see scorching or discolouration, switch off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit. Call us as a matter of urgency — this is not something to leave.
Why are my lights flickering?
Flickering lights are most commonly caused by a loose connection — in the light fitting, switch, junction box or wiring. Occasionally it can indicate a more significant wiring issue. If flickering is accompanied by a burning smell or buzzing sound, treat it as urgent. Isolated flickering from one fitting is usually a straightforward repair.
I have no power in part of my house — is it a tripped breaker or something else?
Check your consumer unit first — a tripped circuit breaker or RCD is the most common cause. If everything looks normal at the board, the fault may be a break in the circuit wiring, a failed connection, or a supply issue. If your neighbours are also affected, contact your electricity supplier. If it’s just your property, call us.
How do you find an intermittent fault?
Intermittent faults are diagnosed using specialist test equipment — insulation resistance testing, loop impedance testing and thermal imaging where appropriate. We inspect wiring, connections, fittings and the consumer unit systematically to find the cause. Intermittent faults take longer, but we find the root cause rather than guessing.
