Common Faults We Fix

Electrical Problems We Deal With Every Day

If something’s wrong with your electrics, don’t ignore it. Some faults are minor — others are a sign of something more serious that needs proper attention.

🔴 Burning Smell or Scorching

A burning smell from sockets, switches or the consumer unit is a potential fire risk. Call immediately — don’t leave it.

🔴 Sparking Sockets or Switches

Visible sparks when plugging in or switching on are a sign of a loose connection or damaged wiring that needs immediate attention.

RCD Keeps Tripping

An RCD that trips repeatedly is protecting you from a fault. We find the cause — a faulty appliance, wiring fault or deteriorating circuit — and fix it properly.

Circuit Breaker Tripping

A breaker that keeps tripping on a specific circuit usually indicates an overload, short circuit or earth fault on that circuit.

Faulty or Dead Sockets

Sockets that don’t work, feel warm or are discoloured may have a loose connection or damaged wiring behind them.

Flickering or Intermittent Lights

Flickering lights are often a loose connection in the fitting, switch or wiring — or occasionally a sign of a more significant wiring issue.

Complete Loss of Power

If you’ve lost power to part or all of your home and it’s not a supply issue, there’s likely a fault that needs tracing before power can be safely restored.

Intermittent Faults

Problems that come and go are often the hardest to diagnose — loose connections, poor earthing or deteriorating insulation can all cause intermittent issues.

Failed EICR — Remedial Works

If your Electrical Installation Condition Report has identified C1 or C2 defects, we carry out the remedial works and issue the completion certificate.

Common Questions

FAQs — Fault Finding

My RCD keeps tripping — what should I do?
First, try unplugging all appliances on the affected circuit and reset the RCD. If it holds, plug appliances back in one at a time to identify the faulty one. If the RCD trips with nothing plugged in, there’s a wiring fault — call us. Don’t keep resetting it and ignoring the problem.
Is it safe to stay in the house with an electrical fault?
It depends on the fault. A burning smell, scorching, sparking or complete loss of power are signs you should treat seriously. Switch off at the consumer unit if you’re in any doubt and call us. For minor faults like a dead socket, it’s generally fine to wait for a proper repair.
How do you find an intermittent fault?
Intermittent faults are diagnosed using testing equipment — insulation resistance testing, loop impedance testing and visual inspection. It takes time but we find the cause properly rather than guessing.
How quickly can you come out?
For emergencies — burning smells, sparking, total loss of power — call Alan directly on 07976 228301. For non-urgent fault finding we typically respond within one business day.
Do you serve Blackheath and Chislehurst?
Yes — we’re based in Chislehurst and work regularly across Blackheath, Bromley, Lee, Eltham, Bickley and SE London.
