Consumer Unit Upgrades & Fuse Board Replacements
Old fuse boxes are a safety risk and may not meet current regulations. A modern consumer unit gives your home proper RCD protection — fitted by a NICEIC Approved Contractor with a written quote before we start.
Signs Your Consumer Unit Needs Replacing
Many homes in Blackheath and Chislehurst still have older fuse boards that don’t meet current safety standards. If any of these apply, it’s worth getting it looked at.
You still have a fusewire board
Old wire fuses provide no RCD protection. When a fuse blows it can be replaced incorrectly with the wrong rating, creating a fire risk.
Your EICR has flagged it as C1 or C2
An Electrical Installation Condition Report identifying the consumer unit as a code 1 or code 2 defect means it needs immediate attention.
You’re having an extension or major work done
Adding circuits to an old board may not be possible or safe. An upgrade means the new work is done properly from the start.
You’re installing an EV charger
EV chargers require a dedicated circuit and often trigger the need for a board upgrade to handle the additional load safely.
How a Consumer Unit Upgrade Works
The job typically takes one day. Your power will be off for part of the day while we work — we’ll agree the timing with you beforehand.
