Inspect Electrical Guide to Electrical Safety – Part 2

Why Your Fuse Board Keeps Tripping

Understanding the Most Common Electrical Faults

One of the most common calls electricians receive is:

“My fuse board keeps tripping.”

While it can be frustrating, this safety feature is actually doing its job.

Modern consumer units are designed to disconnect power quickly when they detect a fault.

The Most Common Causes

Overloaded circuits

Too many appliances operating on the same circuit can cause the protective device to trip.

Faulty appliances

A damaged appliance is one of the most common causes of tripping.

Try unplugging appliances one at a time to identify the cause.

Earth faults

If electricity flows somewhere it should not, the RCD will disconnect power to prevent electric shock.

Damaged wiring

Older or damaged wiring can also cause repeated tripping.

What You Should Do

  1. Disconnect the appliances on the circuit
  2. Reset the circuit breaker
  3. Reconnect them one at a time
  4. Identify the appliance causing the fault

If the circuit continues to trip with nothing plugged in, the issue is likely within the electrical installation.

This should be investigated by a qualified electrician.

Consumer Unit Safety

Consumer units are designed to prevent:

  • electrical fires
  • electric shock
  • damage to appliances

If your fuse board is older or lacks modern RCD protection it may be worth considering an upgrade.
